چکیده

Theory predicts that higher biodiversity in the tropics is maintained by specialized interactions among plants and their natural enemies that result in conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD). By using more than 3000 species and nearly 2.4 million trees across 24 forest plots worldwide, we show that global patterns in tree species diversity reflect not only stronger CNDD at tropical versus temperate latitudes but also a latitudinal shift in the relationship between CNDD and species abundance. CNDD was stronger for rare species at tropical versus temperate latitudes, potentially causing the persistence of greater numbers of rare species in the tropics. Our study reveals fundamental differences in the nature of local-scale biotic interactions that contribute to the maintenance of species diversity across temperate and tropical communities.

Lower Within-Community Variance of Negative Density Dependence Increases Forest Diversity

Local abundance of adult trees impedes growth of conspecific seedlings through host-specific enemies, a mechanism first proposed by Janzen and Connell to explain plant diversity in forests. While several studies suggest the importance of this mechanism, there is still little information of how the variance of negative density dependence (NDD) affects diversity of forest communities. With comput...

Kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of lysine with permanganate ion at different ionic strengths and temperatures

The kinetics of Mn(VII) oxidation of lysine in moderately sulfuric acid solutions was studiedspectrophotometrically in the presence and absence of Mn(II) as catalyst. The reaction was arrangedto be under pseudo first-order condition with respect to Mn(VII). The results showed that the pseudofirst-order rate constant increases with increasing [H2SO4], [(Mn)II], and [lysine]. The dependence ofthe...

Investigation of the Effect of Constructing Small Arc Basins System on Vegetation Composition and Biodiversity in Aridland Ecosystems in the East of Iran (Case study: Rangelands of Sarbisheh, South Khorasan Province)

Introduction: One of the ways of restoration and reclamation of damaged rangeland is to use different methods of rain harvesting such as pitting, counter furrowing, flood spreading, small arc basins system and etc., along with the reduction of runoff, it increases the soil moisture content and thus increases vegetation cover. Biodiversity is most commonly used to describe the number of species....

Global associations between terrestrial producer and vertebrate consumer diversity.

In both ecology and conservation, often a strong positive association is assumed between the diversity of plants as primary producers and that of animals, specifically primary consumers. Such a relationship has been observed at small spatial scales, and a begetting of diversity by diversity is expected under various scenarios of co-evolution and co-adaptation. But positive producer-consumer ric...

Studying the effect of roughness on soil-geotextile interaction in direct shear test

Abstract One of the methods of increasing soil resistance against failure is soil reinforcement using geosynthetics. Soil-geosynthetic interactions are of great importance and are affected by friction and adhesion at their interface. Soil gradation, contact surface roughness and geotextile density are among the factors affecting soil-geotextiles interaction this study, to investigate the eff...
